Director of Staff Development

Department: Skilled Nursing
Salary/Hourly Rate: $88000 - $92000 Per Year

Oakview, a 5-star CMS rated Health Center, is hiring a full time salaried Director of Staff Development! The Director of Staff Development & Infection Control plans and implements orientation, educational programs and infection control training in the health center per State and Federal guidelines. Management responsibility includes the hiring, scheduling, performance management, daily supervision in conjunction with the shift charge nurses, coaching and counseling of CNAs/RNAs for skilled nursing. The DSD/IC conducts health center orientation and maintains the compliance of employee records per State and Federal requirements. A current LVN or RN license in the state of CA is required.

Compensation: $88,000-$92,000 annually (DOE) plus 15% annual bonus potential

Principal Duties:

Orientation & Continuing Education

  • Identifies, plans, implements, directs, and evaluates the orientation and educational programs within the facility based on identified patient and staff needs as well as State and Federal regulations.
  • Provides the Administrator and department heads with a yearly outline of the facility educational programs planned, and monthly calendars of specific in-service programs scheduled.
  • Supports Director of Nursing in overseeing the provision of care by licensed and non-licensed nursing staff to ensure that quality resident care is consistently provided and maintained.
  • Provides continuing education designed to improve and/or maintain skills of both licensed and non-licensed nursing staff.
  • Conducts and provides oversight of orientation and skills checklist for nursing staff.
  • Organizes a skills competency fair, at a minimum of once per year.
  • Includes “STAR” values in orientation and serves as a role model. Utilizes leadership skills to promote a team spirit among the nursing staff and other facility personnel.
  • Knowledgeable of all State and Federal regulations pertaining to skilled nursing facilities. Prepares the facility for successful surveys.
  • Assists with developing, writing, and implementing policies and procedures in accordance with State and Federal guidelines and the facility’s standard of practice for resident care and nursing departmental duties and responsibilities.

Infection Control

  • Serves as the facility’s lead “Certified Infection Preventionist (CIP)” and dedicates approximately 20 hours a week to this role. The remaining FT hours are assigned to an additional Infection Preventionist (IP) designee under the direction of the DSD/IC. Initial infection control training requires minimum of 14 hours within 90 days of hire and 10 hours annually.
  • The DSD/IC is required to have a plan in place for infection prevention quality control and ensure all HCP receive infection prevention and control training on an annual basis and as needed.
  • Design/Development/Implementation of health center infection control program

Key Infection Prevention functions include are not but not limited to:

  • Infection Control Program Management (surveillance, policies and procedures, etc)
  • Regulatory Standards Compliance (testing, reporting, observation adherence, etc)
  • Occupational Health (immunizations, exposure management)
  • Quality Improvement
  • The DSD will follow all local, state and federal guidance as updated by these entities, including reporting, HCP education, management of outbreaks and preventative measures.
  • Monitors potential hazards within the facility to prevent, identify, and control infection.
  • Maintains surveillance reports on a weekly basis and tabulates information on a monthly basis.
  • Implements and maintains an antibiotic stewardship program.
  • Monitors antibiotic usage for appropriate utilization in accordance with “current clinical standards of practice”.
  • Reports at minimum quarterly to the facility Quality Improvement Committee, and monthly or as needed to the facility Infection Control Committee.
  • Implements plans of correction as needed.
  • Conducts “just in time” education and tracking. Increases awareness among nursing and support staff of infection control policies and procedures. Conducts random observations for adherence and maintains logs.
  • Maintains open communication with Director of Nursing and leadership team, reports any findings that need immediate attention.
  • Communicates with facility staff, attending physicians, and outside consultants as necessary to assess and make recommendations to help improve resident care needs and assist with family concerns.

Certified Nurse Assistant Leadership & Supervision

  • Functions as the Immediate Supervisor of Certified Nurse Assistants/Restorative Nursing Assistants (CNAs). Serves as a role model and champion for Core “STAR” Values.
  • Consistently monitors the performance of the CNA’s, under the direction of the Director of Nursing and licensed charge nurses on each shift, to ensure provision of proper resident care while maintaining each resident’s individual rights for privacy, dignity and respect.
  • Responsible for creating, maintaining, and posting work schedules.
  • Prepares and conducts CNA performance evaluations based upon observed performance, input from licensed nursing staff, attendance, safety compliance, and other job-related factors.
  • Works closely with Director of Nursing Services to assist with initial screening and application verification for all new applicants.
  • Participates in recruiting and retention programs under the direction of the Director of Nursing as needed.
  • Works as a licensed charge nurse on the skilled unit when needed to provide nursing care, as needed, to address critical staffing situations.

Other

  • Represent the facility and promote its goals by participating in community events and with community organizations.
  • Participates in the Health Center’s Manager on Duty program.
  • Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and calm within the nursing department.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with residents, family members, facility staff, and community leaders, State and Federal surveyors, physicians and other professionals through effective verbal and written communication.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

What you will bring:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, with a current California LVN/RN license in good standing with the Board of Nursing.
  • Current certificate and training in Staff Development.
  • Certified Infection Preventionist preferred. Ability to achieve certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Minimum of two years of experience providing direct nursing care to aged and chronically ill or mentally disabled patients and one year in planning, implementing and evaluating educational programs in the field of nursing.
  • Ability to lead by example and develop a team environment among the nursing staff and promote a team spirit with all other facility departments in order to promote and maintain continuity of resident care.
  • Ability to develop, plan and implement orientation and educational programs within the facility based on identified patient and staff needs as well as Federal and State guidelines.
  • Ability to effectively oversee and direct the nursing staff to ensure compliance with all internal policies and procedures as well as compliance with all State and Federal regulations.
  • Knowledge of Infection Control, Federal and State regulations, and ability to direct staff in proper procedures regarding infection control.
  • Knowledge of the State and Federal certification survey process and requirements in order to maintain ongoing compliance with State and Federal regulations and to ensure positive survey outcomes.
  • Knowledge and ability to develop write and implement appropriate plans of correction.
  • Computer proficient using Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to become an expert user and trainer for the electronic health record system.
